Common Notions

κοιναὶ ἔννοιαι · koinai ennoiai

Stoicconceptepistemologyreason

The shared, naturally formed concepts the Stoics took as common ground for all reasoning.

What all minds share

The Stoics held that nature furnishes every rational being with koinai ennoiai — common notions of the good, of god, of justice — formed spontaneously from experience and shared across mankind. Right reasoning articulates and tests our particular beliefs against these. Philosophy does not invent its first notions but clarifies the ones reason already plants in all, the ground on which a preconception rests.
