Preconception — the basic notion formed from experience that lets us recognize and reason.

The notion in advance

A prolēpsis is a preconception: a general notion built up from repeated experience, by which we recognize a thing when we meet it and to which we refer in judging. The Epicureans made it a criterion of truth alongside sensation; the Stoics spoke of naturally formed common notions. It is the seed of knowledge already present, half-formed, in every mind.
