Concept
εὐπάθειαι · eupatheiai
The Stoic ideal of apatheia does not mean coldness: in place of the disturbing passions the sage has the eupatheiai, well-reasoned affective states. The Stoics counted three — joy in place of pleasure, caution in place of fear, and rational wish in place of craving. These are the serene, clear-eyed emotions of a soul whose feeling has been brought wholly into accord with reason.
