Deity
Egyptian · the Divine Potter
Khnum is the ram-headed creator-god of Elephantine, lord of the cataract where the Nile's flood was thought to rise. He is the divine potter who fashions each living being — gods, kings, humans, and animals alike — together with its life-force upon his potter's wheel, moulding bodies from the Nile's clay and setting them in the mother's womb.
The image of the god who shapes living forms from clay upon the wheel gave Egypt a vivid counterpart to the Demiurge of the philosophers — the craftsman who imposes form upon unshaped matter, bringing pattern out of the formless.
