Unity as the source and measure of all number, and the nearest image of the One.

The source of number

For the Pythagoreans the monad is the unit, the One taken as the principle of number: from the monad and the indefinite dyad all numbers, and so all things, arise. The Platonists distinguished this arithmetical monad from the One beyond being, yet treated it as its nearest image — unity standing at the head of each order, gathering multiplicity back toward its source.
