Nephthys

Egyptian · the Mourner

Egyptianchthonic

Sister of Isis and wife of Set — yet one of the two divine mourners who guard the dead.

Nephthys is the sister of Isis, Osiris, and Set, and the wife of Set — yet she sided with her sister in the great drama, helping to gather and mourn the slain Osiris. With Isis she forms the pair of divine mourners who weep for the dead and watch over the coffin.

Goddess of the margins — of night, of death, and of the desert's edge — she is the shadowed counterpart to Isis's light. Together the two sisters guard the deceased as once they guarded Osiris, guiding the soul through the perils of the underworld.
