Nut

Egyptian · the Sky

Egyptianprimordial

The star-spangled sky-goddess who swallows the sun each night and gives it birth at dawn.

Nut is the goddess of the sky, arched as a great star-covered woman over the earth-god Geb, her body the vault of heaven. Each evening she swallows the sun, which passes through her during the night to be reborn from her at dawn — so that she is mother of the sun's daily resurrection, and thereby protectress of the dead, who hope to be reborn as the sun is.

Mother of Osiris, Isis, Set, and Nephthys, she was painted inside coffin-lids, enfolding the dead in the promise of rebirth. Where the Greeks set a sky-father, Ouranos, the Egyptians imagined the heavens as a sheltering mother.
