Deity
Egyptian · the Powerful
Sekhmet, 'the Powerful', is the fierce lioness-goddess of war, plague, and destruction — and, as mistress of disease, of healing also. Born of the burning Eye of Ra and sent to punish humankind's rebellion, she so reveled in slaughter that she nearly destroyed the human race, stopped only when the gods dyed beer red as blood and let her drink herself into a stupor.
The 'Eye of Ra' — the sun's blinding, destroying power personified as a wrathful goddess — could appear as Sekhmet, as Hathor, or as her gentler form Bastet: the one divine force that gives life as light yet threatens to consume it as fire, a duality the Egyptians never tired of contemplating.
