To Prepon

τὸ πρέπον · to prepon

Stoicrhetoricdecorumethics

The fitting or becoming — propriety in conduct and speech, the Greek root of ‘decorum’.

What befits

To prepon is the fitting — what suits the person, the moment, and the audience, in action as in speech. In Stoic ethics it shades into the becomingness that should mark every proper act; in rhetoric it is the decorum that good timing serves; in art it is the harmony of part with whole. Cicero rendered it the Latin decorum, and made it a cornerstone of right conduct.
