Tension — the inward tonic motion of pneuma that holds each thing together and gives it its character.

The tension that holds

Stoic physics explains cohesion by tonos, the tension of the all-pervading pneuma as it moves at once inward and outward through every body. The degree and quality of this tension fix what a thing is — mere holding-together in stones, growth in plants, soul in animals, reason in men. Through the tonos of the cosmic breath the whole world is bound into one sympathetic living being.
