The moon-god of Thebes, 'the Traveller', who measures time across the night sky.

Khonsu is the moon-god of Thebes, son of Amun and Mut and third of the Theban triad. His name means 'the Traveller', for he crosses the night sky as the moon; he was honoured as a god of time and its measurement, of healing, and of protection against the demons of the night.

As the lunar power that marks the months and seasons, Khonsu corresponds in the Theban heavens to the role the Greeks gave Selene — the wandering light that measures time against the steady sun of his father, Amun-Ra. His counting of the months also drew him close to Thoth, the other lunar reckoner.
